Capturing the moment without your smart phone might be easier than you think. But is is worthwhile? That depends on whether you prefer real life over virtual reality.
DON’T LOSE THIS MOMENT THROUGH YOUR SMART PHONE FILTER
Have you ever seen a busload of tourists stop near a panorama of scenic beauty, only to exit, take a frenzied barrage of pictures, and then climb back into the coach?
How much natural beauty did they experience?
They “captured” but they never breathed in the crisp mountain air, felt the earth beneath their feet, or marveled in awe at the massive mountains.
After the vacay they’ll scroll through the pictures – often ones they could have purchased from a tourist shop.
Something might be lost by not taking the picture, but something’s definitely lost when your only mementos are pixels.
EXPERIENCE LIFE IN THE MOMENT
Perhaps you can do both.
Moment by moment living embraces the world you experience through your five senses.
It’s good to take pictures, to have reminders of special occasions or people, but this too easily becomes a substitute for being fully present in the moment or retaining it in your mind’s eye. If it’s all about capturing a moment with the intention of sharing or viewing it later – this is to miss experiencing the moment itself!
FILTER LIFE THROUGH YOUR SENSES, NOT YOUR DEVICES
So, next time your sense of sight delights you and you reach for the smart phone, take a few seconds to breathe and listen. Note the temperature of the air, inhale its freshness, and feel the crunch of the snow under your feet. Then take your pictures.
Unless a lapse of a few seconds will mean you lose the shot. In this case, photograph the avalanche first and experience the moment once the shutter has clicked. And get yourself to safety.
😉
So true! We spend way too much time on our phone — and I’m not talking about just taking pictures. People are walking on the street, gazing at their phone, not seeing the world around them. So much beauty is missed. Keep that phone in your pocket, look around, enjoy your walk and you’ll find beauty everywhere.
